Caring for Your Dentures With a Smile

Posted .

I am pleased to provide dentures for my patients in Gainesville, Virginia, who need to replace lost teeth in their smiles. These oral appliances are strong, aesthetically pleasing, and reliable devices which give you the smile confidence you deserve. Of course, this means taking proper care of your dentures. We recommend cleaning your denture regularly to keep it in top shape.

Let’s take a look at how to clean your dentures to maintain a healthy, beautiful smile. First, you will want to rinse your denture after eating. This simple action will help you avoid the buildup of plaque and oral debris which can cling to your appliance. When rinsing your denture, please be careful, as dropping it can result in breakage.

The next thing you will want to do is make sure you clean both your mouth and your dentures every day. For any remaining teeth you have, be sure to brush, floss, and rinse them diligently. If your denture is a full denture, simply clean your oral tissues, including gums, cheeks, tongue, and palate, using a washcloth or soft-bristled toothbrush. In addition to using a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your denture, you will want to use either a nonabrasive toothpaste or a denture cleaner.

Finally, don’t forget to soak your dentures overnight or while you sleep. A cup of water or even a mild denture cleaning solution is the best way to keep your dentures moist while you sleep, and will maintain its form and function.
