As excellent dentists in Gainesville, Virginia, and surrounding areas, Dr. Tontra Lowe, Dr. Emoke Basa, and Dr. Malik Lowe are committed to providing high-quality dental service, community outreach, and promoting the field of dentistry. In keeping with the Awesome Smiles Dental Center mission statement, we have developed a training program to help mentor and support young, talented students pursuing dentistry education and experience.
We are very sensitive to the fact that it is extremely difficult to enter dental school. Even with many hours of shadowing and a pristine academic record, the process is daunting without unique experiences and extra training. This unpaid internship is an enriching opportunity to learn more about dentistry and improve acceptance into any dental school in the country. Also, it allows students to gain over 120 shadowing hours, actual hands-on training, and volunteer credit. Participation also includes access to specialists such as the endodontist, orthodontist, oral surgeon, and periodontist in case candidates are interested in more than general dentistry. A tour of three regional dental schools in the area includes Howard University, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), and the University of Maryland. Awesome Smiles interns’ acceptance rate into dental or medical schools is > 90%.
